tempera paint on cardboard?

im painting some backdrops for a school play and im using tempera paint on to cardboard...

i know that tempera paint is thin so does this mean i have to paint layers? can i make the paint thinker ?

also, do you think the cardboard will wrinkle?

I don't think the cardboard will wrinkle, I KNOW it will wrinkle. You might be able to get away with it if it's small backdrops or just parts of the backdrops & you don't want them to last for very long, like just for the performance & then that's it. But if you you want more then any of that, you are going to run into a lot of problems. You might want to try priming the cardboard first with a regular latex primer, but that will cause it to wrinkle too, but it may not be enough to notice. A LONG time ago I painted backdrops onto cardboard with Tempera paints for a play, everything wrinkled, I HAD to paint in layers (which was fine because I wanted too) & it didn't last. Also it rained on the way down to the theater, not a lot, just a sprinkle & enough to get a small exposed part of the backdrop that I didn't have covered with bisqueen a little wet, & every inch of the paint in that small part ran off & bleeded together, it was a mess, & I swore I'd never do it again. You might want to try looking at another way of doing the backdrops, try spray paints & templates, they wont wrinkle the cardboard as much & they're thicker & will stick better. Or maybe even do things like cut outs or gluing on different material to make the backdrops look 3-D. Sorry, but yeah, good luck with that. =o/
