I am receiving a code 14 on a 94 Celica. This is Code is for the Igniter, Igniter Circuit, or ECM. I have replaced the Igniter, Distributor, Coil, and checked the wiring. None of the wires are cracked or corroded. I am receiving spark because the car starts with starter fluid and runs until the starter fluid is gone. The car stalls randomly with no rhyme or reason. Sometimes will start, sometime will not... It seems the injectors are not firing. Fuel pressure is good. Car ran fine this morning to the store and back. Got in the car about a half hour later and wouldn't start. Suggestions?
sounds like either a short in the wiring, or bad ECM.. try wiggling every wire you can find, while its idling, & see if you can make it stall...
Absolute Ignition Efficiency With a Pontiac Starter
In order to continue having a smooth engine operation, the Pontiac Starter makes use of generated magnetic field to be able to deliver a swift ignition. Recognizing its importance to an optimal delivery and performance, your starter should always be kept in good working condition. Routine check-up and maintenance should always be done so as not to compromise its service and efficiency. Knowing what it does and how it works is important for this.
The automobile self-starter or better known simply as starter is an electric motor that initiates piston motion in a vehicle’s internal combustion engine before it can power itself. It carries out the processes involved in starting up vehicles. It works by channeling the power of the battery. When the key is inserted into the ignition switch it is turned to the start position. This will cause a small amount of current flow through the neutral safety switch and into the starter relay or starter solenoid. With this, the starter motor cranks the engine to allow the piston to create a suction drawing in the air and fuel mixture into the cylinder. The engine will then start as the spark created by the ignition system will ignite this mixture. The modern starter motor is a direct current electric motor with a solenoid switch mounted on it. When the low-current power from the starting battery is applied to the solenoid through a switch it releases a small pinion gear on the starter motor’s shaft and entangles or connects it with the ring gear on the flywheel of the engine. It is also the solenoid that closes out high-current contacts for the starter motor and then it starts to run. A key-operated switch is activated once the engine starts. This causes the spring in the solenoid assembly to pull away the pinion gear from the ring gear which causes the Pontiac Starter motor to stop. The driveshaft which allows the pinion to transmit drive in only one direction is where the starter’s pinion is clutched through a one-way freewheel clutch. This way, drive is transmitted through the pinion to the flywheel ring gear only if the pinion is disengaged. In cases where the pinion remains engaged, say the driver failed to release the key as soon as the engine starts, the pinion will spin independently of its driveshaft. Modern auto starter motors are equipped with a "bendix," a gear and integral freewheel, or overrunning clutch, that allows the flywheel to automatically disengage the pinion gear from the flywheel when the engine starts. A concept that is now being revived in hybrid vehicles is the function of starters as generators once the engine was running.
