trying to run certain games on my computer but it just runs so slow!?

so heres the deal, couple months ago i could play a fairly good looking game on my laptop, now, however, after a few things changed and a new hardrive, it runs so flipping slow!!! if you've ever seen a laptop overheat, then try to play games, thats how its running, only its not overheating, and my sister has the exact same computer and it runs absoluetly fine on hers, just not mine, i've tried updating my video cards drivers but that wont help, im using a radeon by the way, my laptop is a dell inspiron 600m
no i dont have programs running in the backround, i think my computer has more ram inside it, then the computer "knows" it does, as in, it doesnt "see it" , im fairly educated in computer things, not super great, but i get around, so a professional answer would me much desired and helpful

*Yes i do know this laptop is not geared for gaming, but its served me well*
